It Takes a Village to Raise a Child – Part I PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Hillary Clinton rallyIn 1996, Hillary Clinton used the slogan “It takes a village to raise a child,” to push a controversial program advocating that the federal government become involved in raising our children.

She continued this idea in her campaign for the presidency in 2008. It was welcomed by a segment of our society, but most people were alarmed at the idea that the federal government would get involved in the raising of children. The potential intrusion into parental rights was frightening indeed.

Now, alarmingly, the new health care law does exactly what Clinton wanted and more.

While most people have been concentrating on the health care insurance aspects of the law, there’s much more buried in the measure, and some of it is starting to become more widely known. Many of its other provisions are just as dangerous to American freedom as the mandatory insurance and the tremendous increase in taxation that will occur.

But the portions dealing with children and neighborhoods are by far the most dangerous sections of the law. The federal government is mandated to start so-called wellness programs that will intrude into nearly every aspect of government and your life.

In the health care law, under “Improvements In Outcomes for Individual Families,” the government will institute local studies to be implemented into a national strategy. The list of improvements the government wants sounds good at a glance; good enough for any bleeding heart liberal to get behind, that is. But think of the intrusion into individual families, including yours, and the impact federal intrusion and management of families will have on your lives.

The improvements listed are in areas such as prenatal, maternal and newborn health, child health and development, child cognitive, language, socio-emotional, and physical development, parenting skills, school readiness, child academic achievement, reduction in crime, reduction in domestic violence, improvements in family economic self-sufficiency, and more.

Home visiting programs are part of the law. These programs will start at birth at the medical facility. After that the government must come into every home to first gather information before it will then begin using that data to intrude on parental rights.

The idea of school readiness and academic achievement provides the excuse for government agents to nullify parental prerogatives for private and home schooling. If they can test the pre-school children, then they can mold the tests to force you to send your children to government institutions. And, given the social worker mindset, perhaps even take the children away from parents who are resistant to government intrusion.

The questions formulated can be molded in such a way that they can be used to make the parent look unstable or lacking in good parenting skills. For instance, in a strict Christian or Jewish home, parents are admonished to discipline their children. This discipline can be used as an example in today’s world that the parent is guilty of child abuse.

The idea that the government can send people into you home to ask questions is a violation of the Bill of Rights in the first place. First, they cannot come into your home unless a warrant has been issued. Second, they cannot ask questions that may be used against you later on. Such as, if there is a gun in the home (child safety), do you punish your children and how (child abuse), and so forth.

Once this program evolves out of localized studies and then is implemented on a national scale as provided for in the law, the manpower required to implement this legislation will be significant. This also constitutes yet another increase in federal power and control. Because the government will have to hire significant numbers of new bureaucrats, the hiring will represent further federal control of the economy.

Moreover, an employer wields significant influence and control over its employees. Thousands or millions of new federal workers will be influenced by the government, and in turn, looking to government for their welfare, will be inclined to vote in such a way as to retain and expand the departments they work for. Think of this as a self-reinforcing engine of government expansion.

The initial stages are to be implemented in the inner cities and poor areas, providing jobs for such organizations as ACORN or their successors. Historically, socialist activists gravitate to such jobs.

Nationally, it will mean millions of government workers reaching into all parts of the country to implement the program. And our taxes will go up accordingly.

With people like ACORN or their ilk, you can imagine the problems that they can cause parents who do not conform to their mindset and the goal of a socialist America.

Incidentally, part of this process involves the elderly in so-called wellness living programs.

Tennessee Director Parental Righst.Org

Good Morning!
Thank you for pointing out how the federal government is trying to undermine every single aspect of our society. The family has long been a hold out against socialist policies, but now they are mounting a full scale assault on traditional families.
My blog at www.parentalrightstn.blogspot.com further explains the worldview behind this destructive deception in which they claim noble purposes. Don't believe them. They want your children to follow their values not yours.
I am available in Tennessee to speak on this issue by request. See www.tennesseeparentalrights.com for contact information.

Sincerely,
Eric Potter MD

You've obviously not read the legislation or don't know much about home visiting. Every home visiting program that will be funded under this law is VOLUNTARY! No family will be forced to participate in any of these programs. And, these programs do not start in the medical facility (I should know I work with home visiting programs) - hence the term HOME VISITING. Will information be made available about programs in medical facilities? I would imagine so since that information is already available at medical facilities, but no one is going to be showing up at the hospital to intrude on a family's private time. The data to be collected is in reference to a needs assessment that states must conduct in order to be eligible for the money - and conducting the needs assessment does not require the government to go into anyone's home. The needs assessments can be conducted by looking at information that is already publicly and readily available to the state agencies who will be putting together the information. Before you try to scare people into thinking that this new legislation is bad and dangerous, you should really educate yourself on what the legislation actually entails.

This article makes me embarrassed for you. Clearly you have NO idea about the intentions or activities involved in home visiting. Home visiting is about strengthening the bonds in families, positive child development, and preparing children for school. It has nothing to do with taking away parental authority or being 'Big Brother'. In all home visiting programs PARENTS ARE VIEWED AS THE EXPERTS on their children; and participation is completely voluntary and MAY NOT BE MANDATED BY LAW. You seem to be confusing 'home visiting' with 'child protective' services, which are those programs that intervene on suspected and proven child abuse and neglect situations; and whose services are mandated (i.e. "You have to do this or we may take your children into protective custody."). While child protective services do go into homes, they are NOT "home visiting" programs. Clearly you've never been a new mother, especially a teen mom; or you would understand the value of having someone to support you and provide you with parenting information; since babies don't come with instruction manuals.

The idea that home visitations will be voluntary is the same as saying the U.S. Census is voluntary. The Constitution says that government will take a census, but does it require people to answer more than what is asked of Congress to do? That is simply a head count to determine the apportion of Representatives to the House. Some of the government census workers use pressure, intimidation, home visits, and even the threat of fines to get the answers that are not called for in the Constitution. The visits are not voluntary when they show up at your door without appointment. The language of the new law indicates that the Bill of Rights will be trashed. The nature of government and history dictates that this will be the case, no matter how benevolent the system or those that work in it are at this time. Airports are a good example as well where the TSA employees are patriots, veterans, and the like. They mean well, but there is no question that the Bill of Rights does not exist at transporation hubs. You are quilty until proven innocent by searching you and your possessions. I have had a TSA employee state to me that he believes this. It does not matter why they do it, the fact is that they do it. More and more of our government is operating with this type of thinking. It is totalitarian, not American. It is why we broke away from England in the first place, established a Constitution, and Bill of Rights.

Great site. I like the way you explain everything without using complicated terms.
